“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” – Paul Halmos
In 2023, Ben Coman joined the Math Department to teach Accelerated Algebra 2 and Precalculus. Ben grew up in Eastern Long Island and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania. After obtaining a Premedical Postbaccalaureate Certificate at Bryn Mawr College and gaining entry into medical school, Ben realized his passion was in education and decided to pursue this interest. He would go on to coach the Riverdale Men’s Tennis Team before starting a Mathematics teaching position at Uncommon Preparatory Charter School in Canarsie. After three exhilarating years teaching in a charter school environment while obtaining a master’s degree in education, Ben is excited to join Poly’s vibrant community. When not teaching, you can find him playing softball and pickleball with his brothers in Central Park, reading, listening to podcasts about neuroscience, psychology, and fantasy baseball, or exploring Brooklyn with his friends.
Ben believes that every student who walks into his classroom has the capability to thrive in their math pursuits with the right tools, a growth mindset, and targeted rigorous practice. He hopes to inspire his students to love the process of learning mathematics and to nurture the next generation of STEM leaders, one math problem at a time.
